Sasayama Castle Town area
Take a walk around and leisurely try different foods in these elegant streets as you take in their history
The Sasayama Castle Town area extends around the central point of Sasayama Castle, evoking the history and elegance it has carried since the Edo period (1603-1868). The rows of white-walled traditional townhouses, samurai residences, and merchant houses create the feeling that you have slipped back in time. There are plenty of richly individual stores here, including stylish cafes and restaurants in old, refurbished buildings, galleries of tambayaki pottery, and souvenir shops that sell local specialty products.
When you’re trying the different foods, we particularly recommend gourmet treats made using ingredients unique to Tamba-Sasayama, such as Tamba chestnuts and kuromame (black soybeans)! This area is packed with delicious choices, including fluffy kuromame bread and rich Tamba chestnut soft serve ice cream. The Konishi's kuromame bread, created over 100 years ago, is a self-indulgent and heavy item full of kuromame, declared by stores to be the “heaviest in the world”! The bread from Pan no Pu, which sells “hoppeta ochiru kuromame bread,” consists of the irresistible combination of sweet kuromame in a chewy and slightly salty dough. The popular kuromame bread sometimes sells out during the morning, so if you want to try it we recommend you aim to do so early on.
