Genkimura Kamikuge/ Tambaryu-no-Sato Park
An exciting search for fossils in a town where dinosaurs once lived!
In the distant past, 110 million years ago, giant dinosaurs called Tambatitanis (Tambaryu in Japanese) lived in Tamba City. The site of this discovery lies close to Genkimura Kamikuge/Tambaryu-no-Sato Park.
Visitors to the park are greeted by a full-body replica of the Tambatitanis, presumed to measure over 15 meters in length. This figure—so huge you have to look up at it—is so impressive it seems it will come alive now! The park contains dinosaur-themed play equipment—the playground structure shaped like a giant dinosaur is particularly eye-catching. It’s full of mechanisms for play: its long neck forms a slide, rope netting is arranged so children can run around its body, and the round ball play equipment was inspired by dinosaur eggs.
In Genkimura Kamikuge, you can take on the challenge of a fossil-discovery experience (booking required). Children and adults alike will surely become immersed in the processes of using tools to pare down, little by little, rocks packed with the spirit of ancient times, just like researchers. The excitement of wondering if you’ll find anything is overwhelming.
After plenty of fun, head to the cafeteria in Genkimura Kamikuge. In addition to light meals and lunches made with local specialty products, you can enjoy their cute dinosaur-shaped specialty “dinosaur-yaki” confections The cafeteria is only open on weekends and public holidays, so be aware when you visit.
In the souvenir area, you can find something that will become a perfect memory of your trip, such as Tambatitanis goods or local specialty products.
