Sumoto Castle Ruins
A destination with one of Japan's oldest mock keeps and stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea
If you’d like to make the most of the wonderful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea, why not head to Sumoto Castle Ruins, the symbol of Awaji Island. This castle, built by Sengoku Hidehisa, a vassal of the famous samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi, is full of the spirit of history.
This is an easy destination to visit, as you can enter the park in which the Sumoto Castle Ruins (Upper Castle) stand free of charge.
Head up to the mountain summit, and a breathtaking vista spreads before your eyes. Look out over the blue sea and sky, as well as the streetscape of Sumoto; on fine days, you can even see as far as Kansai International Airport and the streetscapes of Osaka. This great panorama is a special prize that only those who put in the effort to ascend the mountain can experience.
Rising up from the mountain peak is one of Japan’s oldest mock keeps, built to commemorate the enthronement of the Showa Emperor (who reigned 1926–1989). Seeing this historic structure close up is a special experience unique to this destination.
In October 2025, the 046cafe (pronounced “oshiro cafe”) was opened in the Honmaru, the innermost section of the castle. This is the best spot for a leisurely break, where you can enjoy their original 046 blend and nobori-ishigaki blend, as well as canelé and chiffon cakes made with carefully selected local ingredients. For a souvenir, we recommend an exclusive magnet with the family crest of the castle lords, made from Awaji roof tile.
The Sumoto Castle Festival is held on November 3 each year. This enables participants to really experience a “samurai mood” by taking commemorative photos dressed in armor and a helmet and joining in sword-fighting with a sponge blade. The park also hosts the “Daiishidan-nobori janken taikai,” a paper, rock, scissors tournament that makes use of the famous great stone steps, and a stamp rally, which can be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
You can make the most of nature, history, and superb views in the Sumoto Castle Ruins. This is a special place that enables you to have fun experiencing history and culture as well as fantastic vistas. Head to Sumoto Castle Ruins on your next weekend!
