Awaji Monkey Center

Head on a journey to meet Japanese macaques, brimming with curiosity, in the great natural world of Awaji Island

The Awaji Monkey Center is home to around 100 wild Japanese macaques living in the lush natural world of southern Awaji Island.

It’s a special place where you can observe the monkeys living naturally, outside of any cages, from up close.

Just watching cute monkeys play happily in the trees and groom each other is enough to warm the heart.

From May to the summer, you’ll see sweet baby monkeys being carried on their mother’s back, while in winter, you can spot “saru dango” (“monkey dumplings”), formed by the monkeys huddling together to stave off the cold. Each season offers differently charming sights.

There’s even a monkey-feeding experience that enables you to reach out to the monkeys.

The monkeys will take the food directly from your hands. Their expressions, brimming with curiosity as they come closer to you, will surely make for an unforgettable memory.

Plus, the grand appearance of the “boss monkey” who leads the troop and the way he takes the food in his hand evokes the special feeling and unique power of wild monkeys. The monkey boss possesses a sense of duty that means he protects those in a vulnerable position, and is incredibly cool.

The center also has a shop that is perfect for finding a memory of your trip. There’s a plentiful lineup of original goods, including adorable stuffed monkey toys, keychains, and confections. You can also buy rich soft serve ice cream made with milk from Awaji Island, so you can relax and take a breather.

Come here to meet the monkeys living with vigor among nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday, for a special time full of soothing discoveries.
