Sasayama Castle Oshoin

Slip back in time to the Edo period! Learn about the history of Sasayama Castle and become a samurai or princess with a dressing-up experience

Sasayama Castle Oshoin is an elegant historic building that tells us of the history of Sasayama Castle, built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate government in the early 17th century. Clear vestiges of that period remain in its vast grounds, moat, and stone walls, making it an irresistible destination for history fans!

One of Oshoin’s appeals is its magnificent architectural beauty. Its construction brought together the best of the techniques of the day. The inside is open to the public as a museum, where you can learn about the fortifications of Sasayama Castle, the formation of the castle town, and the changing feudal lords through models of Sasayama Castle, panels, and historic materials. The theater room plays a video entitled “The Story of Sasayama Castle,” enabling you to learn about the history of the fortifications of Sasayama Castle through a short movie.

The dressing up experience is popular among visitors to Sasayama Castle, creating the impression that you have slipped back in time to the Edo period (1603-1868)! This experience enables you to wear the armor and helmet of a samurai or the highly formal uchikake kimono of a princess. You can take commemorative photos or walk around the inside of the building in the hand-made, elaborate samurai armor and helmet or a beautiful uchikake kimono. Why not take a snapshot in your favorite spot?

After looking around Sasayama Castle, enjoy a walk through the castle town area. Here, you can have fun trying gourmet foods made with local specialties such as Tamba chestnuts and kuromame (black soybeans).
