Sawanotsuru Museum

A reconstruction of an old sake brewery. Experience the history of Japanese sake for yourself in this museum

Sawanotsuru Museum stands in Nadagogo, Kobe’s representative sake-brewing area. It is a brewery founded over 300 years ago, which passes on traditional sake-making to the present day. Entry is free, so you can easily drop in for a visit.
Step into the museum, a reconstructed sake brewery with a seismic isolation system that was originally built in the late Edo period (1603–1868), to feel the coolness of the atmosphere and experience the history of sake-brewing for yourself. The museum displays equipment from this period and introduces the processes of Nada sake-making in a way that is easy to understand. Must-sees include valuable remnants such as the kojimuro, where malt was created, and the funaba, where sake was squeezed from mash. Find out how sake-making traditions have been passed down to today, and experience its profound nature for yourself.
After looking around, head to the museum shop, where you can make the most of the appeal of Japanese sake. You can taste various brands from Sawanotsuru, and even try pure, unblended sake that you can only enjoy here. We recommend finding your favorite drink and taking it home as a souvenir.
