Weathercock House (Kazamidori no Yakata)

Experience the fascination of Kobe, full of the exotic, in this red building known for its weathercock

Weathercock House is the symbol of Kobe’s Kitano Ijinkan-Gai (former foreign residences in the Kitano district, Kobe). It is a building with a red-brick exterior, made conspicuous by the weathercock on its pointed roof, and was constructed as the residence of former German trader Gottfried Thomas. The brickwork, unusual for the time, and the weathercock that is said to act as a ward against evil spirits gave it its nickname, and it is now registered as a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.

Take a step inside to find yourself in another world. The reception room and dining room, filled with luxurious furnishings, tell us of the affluent lifestyle of the time. In particular, the fireplace, which was delivered from Germany, the stunning Jugendstil stained glass (part of the Art Nouveau style), and the carefully detailed ornaments are must-sees.

From the garden, you can see the streets of Kobe spread before you, and this is popular as an excellent photo spot. Enjoy an ambiance of history and foreign culture, enveloped by a nostalgic atmosphere, with all five senses.

The Kitano Ijinkan area has many steep slopes and steps, so we recommend you wear shoes that are easy to walk in.
