Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park

A message connecting memories of disaster with the future

The Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park stands in a corner of Meriken Park, the symbol of the Port of Kobe. It’s an important place that informs us today of the tremendous damage caused by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Part of the Meriken Wharf, which collapsed due to the quake, has been preserved as it was then. The heavily leaning streetlamp and the cracked wharf are the existing proof that tell us of the terror of the quake. These sights have a profound impact on visitors, and etch the memory and lessons from the earthquake in their minds.

The contents of the exhibition were updated in 2025, and now inform people of the state of the Port of Kobe at the time of the earthquake and the journey of the people as they achieved a strong recovery through panels, images, and models. The Memorial Park has also introduced content that makes use of AR, so people can learn about earthquakes through new technologies—for example, by comparing scenes before and after the quake.
