Taisho Romankan

A photogenic space full of the romance of the Taisho period: Make sure to get a souvenir from Tamba-Sasayama here

Did you know that there’s a place where you can feel the vestiges of the Taisho period (1912–1926) in the castle town of Tamba-Sasayama City in Hyogo Prefecture? The Taisho Romankan has repurposed the building once used as Sasayama Town Hall, and a wide, nostalgic space awaits you when you step inside. This business offers rows of carefully selected products, including specialty products representative of Tamba-Sasayama and handicrafts.

The cafe & restaurant Marl Cotte inside the Taisho Romankan serves rice burgers, toasted sandwiches, and sweets made with plenty of local ingredients. The kuromame (black soybean) soft serve ice cream made using black soybeans from Tamba-Sasayama is particularly popular! It also includes plenty of kinako soybean flour in addition to the kuromame, offering a delicious taste that sweet-lovers can’t get enough of.

The Taisho Romankan is a very short walk from the remains of Sasayama Castle. We recommend it as a spot to purchase souvenirs when taking a break from exploring the castle.
