Old Fukuchiyama Railway Line Hiking Course

Walk a historic route and journey along the old Fukuchiyama Railway Line

The old Fukuchiyama railway line stretches 4.7 km along the Muko River valley, and is a popular hiking route that will stir your sense of exploration. This two-hour route is full of highlights, including commanding bridges and swift rapids and rocky mountains that evoke the dynamism of the natural world. Walking this course will make you feel as if you are an explorer, discovering some of the remaining rails and sleepers and travelling through pitch black tunnels. Stand where trains once ran, and immerse yourself in a feeling of nostalgia so you can almost hear the sounds of the train whistles and the clickedy-clack of the rail joints.

Near Takedao Station, the access hub for this trail, there is a free-to-use footbath and a hot spring for day visits, as well as eateries where you can savor seasonal ingredients: perfect for a break after your hike. This spot also bustles with large numbers of visitors in the seasons for cherry blossoms and fall leaves.

*There are no toilets or stores along the course. We recommend that you use the toilets in Namaze Station or Takedao Station before you start, and bring drinks and snacks with you.
*There are no lights inside the tunnels, so make sure you have a flashlight or other form of illumination.
