Ieshima Islands

Undertake a trip to islands full of history and nature, lying half an hour from Himeji Port

The Ieshima Islands, where you will find dynamic scenery made up of 44 islands of varying size, lie in the Harimanada Sea in the south-west of Hyogo Prefecture. They can be easily reached in as little as 30 minutes by boat from Himeji Port, and are a designated part of Setonaikai National Park.
These islands have flourished since ancient times as important locations for fishing and maritime travel, and you can feel that history in every part of the islands today. Ieshima, which retains the charm of an old-fashioned fishing town, houses Ieshima Shrine, associated with Sugawara no Michizane (also known as Tenjin, the god of scholarship). We recommend using a rental bicycle to travel through the stretch of elegant townscape, where you can feel its long history. Bozejima is home to a flourishing fishing industry, and the best part of visiting this island is the fresh marine delights, especially tasting the branded Boze-saba mackerel and Boze-tako octopus.
You can enjoy sea-swimming and fishing on Dangajima, which has an unusual topography caused by broken stone, and see the deer living leisurely in Dangajima Park. You can also have fun camping and trying marine sports on Nishijima, with similar dynamic scenery created by the rock walls carved from quarrying.
