Iwatsuhime Jinja Shrine
See the ocean through the torii gates! Discover a place for lovers and fantastic views at Iwatsuhime Jinja Shrine in Ako
Iwatsuhime Jinja is a shrine with superb views, standing at the tip of Ako Misaki facing the sea. It’s an ancient shrine with history that can be traced back to the Heian period (794–1185)—pass through the torii gates, and you’ll see a wonderful panorama of the glittering Seto Inland Sea. Its breathtaking beauty has also led to its recognition as a sacred place for lovers. Since ancient times, it has attracted many worshippers as a place to pray for safe sea travel, large catches, and to the deity of marriage.
If you visit, make sure you pick up a Hime-mamori (a protective charm) for blessings in marriage. The shrine also sells various other omamori, and its goshuin seals, with beautiful seasonal designs that change by the month, are also popular. It hosts plenty of fascinating events in each season: the Tondo Matsuri festival in January prays for good health in the new year, while the Wagoshi Matsuri festival in June sees people pass through a cogon grass ring to purify their minds and bodies. The October Aki Matsuri (Fall Festival) includes a magnificent shishimai lion dance, and the shrine grounds are filled with energy. One of the joys of Iwatsuhime Jinja Shrine is the different forms it seems to take in each season you visit.
After visiting the shrine, head to Kirakira Slope, a stone-paved slope which runs from Iwatsuhime Jinja Shrine to the sea! This hilly path, decorated with colorful tiles, will make you feel that you’re overseas. Try to find the hidden heart stone as you walk, and savor confections at a cafe with stunning views overlooking the sea—superlative photogenic moments await.
The area is also home to highlights such as the “Oishi-nagori no Matsu” pine tree. After enjoying a full day in Ako Misaki, head to the nearby Ako Onsen! Soothe the tiredness of your travels in an open-air bath with wonderful panoramic views.
