Meet an Award-Winning Lacquer Master, an Expert from Cultural Property Restoration to Antique Repair

Lacquer has long been indispensable to craftsmanship and its transmission through the production of lacquerware and the restoration of cultural assets due to its role as a paint and adhesive.

Lacquer artist, Yuzo Eto, is based in Himeji City where the famous Himeji Castle is located.

He uses lacquer to create not only handcrafts by applying traditional techniques, but also the artwork the the traditional and innovative style. Mr. Eto, who has won various awards, is an active artist around the world including Japan, U.S., Italy, France, and the UAE.

Visit the artist’s atelier and engage in a meaningful conversation to learn about his work and passion.

Meet at the atelier of Eto Lacquer Arts and Crafts.
・Introduce the artist and his portfolio as a restorer of cultural properties, a craftsman of kintsugi, maki-e, and painting craftsman, and an artist. ・Information on the charms and characteristics of lacquer and how they can be applied to traditional techniques and works of art.
・A tour on the craft restorations in progress. The visitor may show his actual work in progress.
・Lacquer painting and kintsugi experiences, as well as bringing in works to be restored and requesting restoration, are available as options.
