Does Muslim can Enjoy Izakaya?
It Comes True at Izakaya Gonta in Himeji City!

Izakayas are traditionally known as places where people enjoy alcoholic drinks alongside food, and they are an essential part of everyday Japanese life. As a traveler, I always hope to experience how people in Japan actually spend their time, and dining at an izakaya is one of those experiences. However, for Muslim travelers, finding a halal-friendly izakaya has long felt almost impossible.

During my visit to Himeji, I was searching for a place where I could experience authentic Japanese izakaya culture while still feeling comfortable as a Muslim traveler. That search led me to Izakaya Gonta, a long-established local restaurant located within walking distance of Himeji Castle.

From the moment I stepped inside, it was clear that this was not simply a restaurant that “offers halal food,” but one that genuinely understands and respects food diversity.

A Warm, Local Izakaya Atmosphere

Izakaya Gonta has been loved by locals for many years, and the atmosphere reflects that history. The interior feels casual and welcoming, with the lively but relaxed mood typical of a Japanese izakaya.

Halal Options That Let You Enjoy “Real” Japanese Food

One of the highlights of my visit was being able to enjoy halal wagyu ramen in an izakaya setting — something that is still rare in Japan, especially outside major cities. It became a valuable opportunity to feel closer to Japanese food culture in a truly natural way.

The Gonta`s Halal Wagyu Ramen left a strong impression on me. The bowl is generously topped with premium halal-certified Wagyu beef, and from the very first sip, you can taste the depth of umami in the broth. It is rich, yet surprisingly well-balanced, making it both satisfying and easy to enjoy.

The Wagyu slices were tender and melted gently in the mouth, releasing a natural sweetness and layered flavor that lingered pleasantly. The texture felt luxurious without being overwhelming, adding a refined touch to what might otherwise be a simple bowl of ramen.

Even though the soup is full-bodied, it finishes cleanly, so I found myself enjoying it all the way to the last sip without feeling heavy. It exceeded my expectations for an izakaya-style restaurant and something even dedicated ramen lovers would appreciate.

What stood out to me most was the sense of comfort it offered. Being able to enjoy halal Wagyu prepared with such care meant I could fully experience a classic Japanese meal without worrying about ingredients. The halal options did not feel like a separate or limited menu, but rather a natural part of the restaurant’s offerings, which made the experience feel thoughtful and genuinely welcoming.

Izakaya Gonta doesn’t focus only on halal; they also offer vegan and vegetarian options, making it a comfortable choice for groups with different dietary needs.

I tried the vegan yaki udon, and it was surprisingly satisfying. The thick udon noodles were chewy and well-seasoned, coated evenly in a savory sauce that wasn’t too heavy. It was loaded with fresh vegetables, giving the dish both color and texture, and finished with a sprinkle of nori (seaweed) that added a subtle umami aroma.

Thoughtful Hospitality That Leaves an Impression

What impressed me most during my visit was the attentive and considerate service provided by the staff. When I asked about the halal options, they clearly explained which dishes were suitable, what ingredients were used, and how the food was prepared.

Even before the food was served, I could sense the care and attention given to accommodating dietary needs, which allowed me to enjoy the meal with complete peace of mind. I felt that the reason many international visitors choose to dine at Izakaya Gonta is not only because of the quality of the food, but also because of the restaurant’s sincere and natural willingness to welcome guests with diverse dietary requirements.

A Great Stop After Exploring Himeji Castle

After spending time exploring Himeji Castle, dining at Izakaya Gonta felt like the perfect way to end the day. It offered a chance to relax, enjoy local flavors, and experience Japanese food culture in an inclusive and respectful environment.

My Takeaway

If you are visiting Himeji and looking for a place where you can enjoy halal-friendly and vegan-friendly Japanese cuisine in a true local izakaya, Izakaya Gonta is a place I can confidently recommend.

It’s a restaurant that shows how traditional Japanese dining and food diversity can coexist — naturally, thoughtfully, and deliciously.
