History - Kobe

Kitano Ijinkan (Foreigners Residences)

The Ijinkan (foreigners residences) were established in 1867 along with the opening of the Port of Kobe. There used to be about 1,000 houses but now there are only 30 located in the Kitano area.

Kyukyoryuchi (Old Foreign Settlement)

The Old Foreign Settlement was established as a place where foreigners could live and trade when the Port of Kobe opened at the end of the Tokugawa regime.

Nankinmachi

Along with Yokohama and Nagasaki, Nankinmachi is one of the three largest China towns in Japan. More than 100 shops and authentic Chinese restaurants are located in this lively area.

Nada Gogo (Nada Sake)

Nada Gogo is one of the largest sake brewing areas in Japan and has about a 30% share of the sake production market in Japan.

Ikuta Shrine

Ikuta Shrine has a long history and according to the Nihon Shoki (the Chronicles of Japan), it was founded around the third century. It is also affiliated with the god of matrimony.

Minatogawa Shrine

There are several important cultural properties and treasures connected to the warrior Kusunoki Masashige. There are also many paintings and calligraphic works, swords on display.

Sumadera Temple

The head temple of Shingon Buddhism Sumadera Sect founded this temple in 886.

Nofukuji Temple (Hyogo Daibutsu)

The Hyogo Canal is one of the largest in Japan and has an area of about 34 ha and a length of 2.5 km. There is a 300 meter long walking path called the Canal Promenade along the canal.
