Kitano Ijinkan (Foreigners Residences)

History Kobe

The Ijinkan (foreigners residences) were established in 1867 along with the opening of the Port of Kobe.  There used to be about 1,000 houses but now there are only 30 located in the Kitano area.  However, the number of houses open to the public is increasing and tourists now can visit about twenty different houses.
