| [Kobe Port / Meriken Park] |
 |
Kobe was originally a good natural harbor and
has a long trading history with China and Korea since ancient times. After the
end of the closed-country policy in the Edo period, Kobe re-opened its port to
the world in 1868 and has developed into an international hub port.
The Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake struck the Kobe port in 1995, but Kobe swiftly
recovered from the devastation only in two years. Meriken Park is built on reclaimed
land from the sea between Meriken Harbor and Naka Pier. Meriken comes from the
English word, “American”, because Japanese people caught the word
“American” as “Meriken” in the Meiji Era. One can find
Kobe Port Tower, Kobe Maritime Museum, Hotel Okura Kobe and Kobe Meriken Park
Oriental Hotel in the park area. At night you can enjoy beautifully illuminated
buildings and Kobe Harbor Land which is across the bay from the Park as well.
